π "our lives are better now"
Abbie's point of view
The next morning, I woke up to the sound of the cock crow.
I looked down at mark. He was still sleeping.
I knelt down to pray.
There was this prayer point that strucked me.
"God, let today be different from other days" I began to pray.
After praying, I woke Mark up.
"Good morning aunty" he greeted while yawning and stretching himself.
"Good morning, how was your night?"
"I don't really know about that"
"I understand" I said, patting his shoulder.
"Today, we're going straight to the market. I've already swept madam Amelia's shop and washed everything that was dirty"
He frowned.
"Why the long face?"
"You know you shouldn't be doing everything by yourself"
"I know but I'm doing it to help us"
"Okay"
"Go and take your bath"
We went to Madam Amelia's house to collect our buckets, groundnut and sachet water.
We arranged the water in the bucket and left.
On our way to the market, we meet madam Amelia.
"Good morning ma" Mark and I chorused.
"Good morning, how are you?" She asked.
"We're fine, thank you" I said.
"You know you're going to stop this business soon"
"But I can't quit now, I still have a lot to do"
"I know" she placed some money in my hands.
"Ma, I can't accept this"
"You can and you have to. You need it for Mark and the baby" she insisted.
"Thank you so much" I said, she waved goodbye and left.
"How much is it?" Mark asked.
"One thousand"
"It's good"
"I'll give it to you, you need it more than I do"
He frowned.
"If there's anyone who needs this money, then it's you. Keep it" he said.
I smiled at him and we proceeded to the market.
Such a cool kid!
It's so unfortunate he's out here on the streets, struggling to survive.
It breaks my heart to see him like this. He might be young but he's strong and smart.
I'll be by your side Mark, through thick and thin. I'll make life better for you. You deserve it, kiddo.
"Let's split, meet me under that mango tree by noon"
"Okay" he said and we split ways.
NOON TIMEπ
I couldn't finish selling my water because I was already tired. I went and sat under the mango tree, waiting for Mark to get back.
"Where's Mark? It's been almost an hour and he's not here yet. Why is he taking long?" I thought.
Two girls were passing by soon they began to laugh.
"Wonders shall never end" the first girl said.
"you mean this young girl is pregnant? It shall be well" the second girl said.
They walked past me, still laughing.
I didn't let their words get to me. I have lots of things to worry about and their words ain't one of them.
Then I spotted Mark. He was running towards me.
I let out a sigh of relief.
"hian!... He's okay" i muttered
"Aunty, I sold everything" he said when he got to me.
"That's very good. Great job. Now, let's go get something to eat" I said and stood up.
We were on our way to a store when I heard someone shouting.
"Hey, water girl" a man shouted from the other side of the road. He was referring to me.
"Mark, let's go. Someone is calling" I rushed towards the road. I didn't even look left or right.
I just ran into the road.
Then I heard Mark's voice
"Aunty, look out" I stopped right in the middle of the road.
Next thing I knew, everything fell off my hand and I was falling to the ground.
BLACK OUT!
Mark's POV
Oh no!!!!!!! i screamed.
I dropped my bucket and ran to aunty Abbie. I tried shaking her but she wasn't waking up, People had already gathered around.
"Someone help us please" I cried out.
A lady came out of the car. She looked shocked.
She bent down beside her.
"What have I done?" She whispered.
"Please help her into the car" she said pointing towards her car.
Some boys carried her into her car. I also got in and so did the lady.
She started the car and drove off.
She was driving fast. I didn't feel comfortable with it but I had no choice than to keep mute.
She drove into a hospital. She got down and went into the hospital.
Soon, she came out with three nurses. They had a bed with them.
Huh?
A bed with wheels?
wierd. i muttered under my breath.
They got aunty Abbie out of the car and placed her on the bed. Then, they rolled her in.
"Don't worry kid, she'll be fine. The car didn't actually hit her. She only passed out because of fear. I'll be back"
She went inside.
few minutes later, she came out and entered the car.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked her.
"My house. Don't be scared, I don't bite" she said and started the engine.
She took me to her house. She showed me the bathroom where I had my bath, She brought me new clothes, which i wore.
She also gave me food to eat.
The meal was so delicious .
She's so nice.
She asked me about myself. I told her our story.
Can you believe she cried after hearing it?
"I'm so sorry" she said, wiping away her tears.
"From now on, you both can stay with me"
"Really?" I asked in surprise.
"Yes"
"Thank you so much" i greeted her kneeling.
In the evening, we both went to the hospital. We sat down in the waiting room.
"She's awake" a nurse said to us.
"Okay, let's go" she said to me and we both walked to her ward.
"Aunty" I ran to her.
"Mark" she hugged me.
"Where are we?"
I only smiled and gave a simple reply.
"Our lives are better now"
"I don't understand"
"Hello my dear" aunty Felicia greeted and sat beside her
"Hello, good evening"
Aunty Felicia smiled at her.
"What's going on?" She asked me.
"Aunt Felicia is taking us in"
"I still don't understand". aunty abbie looked confused.
"Mark here, told me about the two of you, how you struggled to survive. I'm so sorry for what happened. I decided to take you two in"
"For real?"
"Yes, for real"
"Thank you so much"
"You're welcome"
Aunty Abbie was discharged the next day and we lived a luxurious life with aunty Felicia.
Everything was going perfectly until one fateful evening...
